HURRICANE KATRINA ANIMALS - ORPHANS OF THE STORM

To consider your own personal disaster preparedness, please click here.

Below are a handful of pictures of the Gulf Coast animals taken in by The SPCA of Monterey County following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The ultimate goal was to reunite any owned animals with their families and we are happy to announce that we found the original families for 18 of the 31 dogs - a 58% success rate!

When "Yellow" arrived from the Gulf Coast, The SPCA gave her a full veterinary exam and learned she suffered from heartworm disease.  When Yellow's family was found in late November, The SPCA began treating Yellow for her heartworm at no charge to her owners so she could go home in full health.  During this difficult two-month treatment, Yellow was fostered by SPCA Wildlife Supervisor and RVT Sue Campbell.

In February, Yellow's owners called The SPCA to surrender Yellow to The SPCA, citing the loving care she was receiving from our staff.  Yellow is now a permanent member of the Campbell family.
