The SPCA Goes to the Races!

Join The SPCA for Monterey County at the 2008 Monterey Sports Car Championships at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca!  You’ll meet great adoptable animals, learn more about your local, independent SPCA, and see a great partnership in action that helps animals in need.

The Mazda drivers racing in support of the “Adopt A Shelter Animal” program this year are Joel Miller and Chuck Hulse  in the Star Mazda Championship and Laura Olson in the Playboy MX-5 Cup.  Joel, Chuck, and Laura visited The SPCA on Thursday, October 16 to promote adoption.

The SPCA will also have a place of honor during the weekend in the MAZDASPEED paddock.  Stop by to learn about The SPCA, meet staff and volunteers, and see photos of great adoptable animals including “Zoom-Zoom,” named in honor of Mazda, and “Corkscrew,” whose name doesn’t need any explanation for Laguna Seca fans. Be sure to also keep an eye out for Earl and Mooch from the popular MUTTS comic strip!

On Saturday, October 18, Playboy Playmates Deanna Brooks, Stephanie Glasson, Shallan Meiers, and Pilar Lastra will visit The SPCA for Monterey County to promote rabbit adoptions.  The event is open to the public and will include an autograph signing and a ticket giveaway to the Monterey Sports Car Championships.  During the event, attendees will also meet “Deanna,” “Stephanie,” “Shallan,” and “Pilar,” four adoptable bunnies that The SPCA has named in honor of the Playboy Playmates.  The event lasts from 1:30 to 2:30 pm.

“The SPCA’s doors are open to all animals in need” says Beth Brookhouser, SPCA Director of Community Outreach.  “We rescue and shelter barn animals, cats and dogs, exotic animals…we even operate a Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center.  This event helps us showcase the fact that we are here for all animals in need, including rabbits.”

Right now, all rabbit adoptions at The SPCA are only $10 each or two rabbits for $10.  The adoption fee includes the rabbit’s spay or neuter surgery and permanent microchip identification.  Rabbits are intelligent, social animals that form lifelong bonds with their human companions. They are capable of being litter-box trained and their playful antics will warm your heart for years to come. A well cared for house rabbit has a lifespan of five to ten years.
