After an incredibly successful event in May, SPCA Monterey County is holding another free microchip and affordable vaccination event on Friday, July 17, from 9 am to 2 pm at the SPCA Veterinary Clinic in Salinas.
Every year, the SPCA rescues thousands of stray dogs and cats, but a heartbreaking 89% of them arrive with no identification: no collar, ID tag, or microchip. This makes reuniting these lost pets with their worried families incredibly difficult if not impossible.
To ease financial barriers and keep families whole, the SPCA is hosting a Free Microchip & Affordable Vaccination Event on Friday, July 17, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the SPCA Veterinary Clinic.
“A microchip is one of the most effective tools we have to bring lost pets home,” says Ben Shaw, SPCA Shelter Manager. “When an animal enters our care with an updated microchip, we can often call their owner within minutes. We want to give every family in our community that absolute peace of mind, completely free of charge.”
During the event, the SPCA will also provide essential pet vaccinations for just $25 each, helping pet owners safeguard their companions against common illnesses affordably. No appointments are required.
A microchip is a tiny electronic chip, about the size of a grain of rice, implanted just beneath the pet's skin. It contains a unique registration number that links directly to the owner’s contact information when scanned by a shelter or veterinary clinic.
“Accidents can happen to even the most careful owners: a gate blows open, or a collar slips off during a sudden scare,” says Shaw. “Collars and tags are wonderful first lines of defense, but a microchip is a permanent ticket home. By making microchips free and vaccines affordable, we hope to stop lost pets from ever needing to enter a shelter in the first place.”
