How to Foster to Adopt:

  • Visit our Adoption Page and click "Foster to Adopt" in the left hand side bar (on desktops) or the top of the page (on mobile devices) to see the pets eligible for this program, then visit SPCA Monterey County to meet your Foster to Adopt pet in person
  • Foster to Adopt lasts up to 72 hours, giving you time to spend bonding with the pet in your home
  • Foster to Adopt Pricing:
    • Dogs: $50, which is non-refundable and does not go towards the adoption fee.
    • Cats: $50, which does not go towards the adoption fee. Like with dogs, this fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • SPCA Monterey County will provide all the pet food and any medications you need during the 72 hour period
  • If you choose to adopt, the adoption can be finalized either over the phone (saving you driving time!) or in-person. If you choose not to adopt, we ask that you fill out a profile on the pet to provide valuable information and insights to future adopters.

Please Note:

  • Adopters must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver's license and all household members must agree to fostering
  • If you have a dog at home, we ask that they meet your Foster to Adopt dog first
  • Applicants must live within 1.5 hours of SPCA Monterey County
  • Only the pets marked as Foster to Adopt on our website are available for this program
  • Participants agree to not take their foster to dog parks, off-leash beaches, or any other off-leash location. Dogs must remain on leash and harness at all times when in the public during the 72 hour period.

MEET OUR FOSTER COORDINATOR

  • Destinee Lopez
    Destinee Lopez

Destinee Lopez is the Foster Coordinator and Shelter Health Evaluator at SPCA Monterey County. Destinee grew up locally and shared her family home with her parents and six brothers! Growing up she had an SPCA adoptee Buster the Boxer who she had for 13 amazing years. Destinee joined the SPCA in June of 2019; she started as the adoption and Intake specialist, spent some time working as Animal care, Veterinary Assistant, Client Care receptionist and now does Foster and Shelter Medicine full time! Destinee's dream has always been to work closely with animals and learn about their health and behavior. She is very grateful to work for an organization that not only advocates for the animals but also does so much good for the community. Destinee's favorite part about working at the SPCA is spending time with the animals who need a little extra care and love. She finds joy in lifting their spirits and seeing them blossom before heading to their forever home.

Destinee spends her off time with her wonderful husband Alex and their 6 year old Siberian Husky Dakota who is full of personality and spunk! Destinee loves going on long walks with her family, taking frequent trips to Lake Tahoe, going camping and exploring nature as often as possible!
