Your SPCA Monterey County Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is caring for five tiny nestling western screech owls who were orphaned when someone cut down their tree in Prunedale.
The small baby owls currently weigh between 110 and 130 grams, about the weight of a standard deck of playing cards. They are about 3.5” tall, smaller than a can of Red Bull.
The screech owl babies are four weeks old and thankfully came to the SPCA Wildlife Center in fair health. They are being carefully tended to by skilled SPCA wildlife rehabilitators, who provide feedings four times a day like their parents would. They are currently in a safe indoor enclosure with a surrogate stuffed toy mother owl.
As they grow into fledglings, they will move to an outdoor enclosure where they will learn to hunt and fly. Once they are old enough, we will release them back into the wild near where they were found.
Your donations make all our rescues possible.
The SPCA Wildlife Center is the only full-service wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center in Monterey County. Last year we rescued 2,863 injured, orphaned, or sick wild animals, many of them tiny babies.
Right now, we are caring for 36 wild patients, including two baby squirrels, four baby hummingbirds, four baby rats, and five baby opossums.
As we move into the Spring and Summer months, we expect those numbers to skyrocket. It’s not unusual for our dedicated team of staff and volunteers to care for over 100 baby birds in a single day. All our rescues are only made possible by your generous, compassionate support.
