Monica Schmidt was born and raised in Monterey with a love for animals since childhood, always having a dog (or three) as part of the family. After graduating from the University of Washington in Seattle and living in Colorado with her now-husband, she moved back to Monterey with an even greater appreciation for the area and a mission to give back to the community. Prior to working at the SPCA, Monica worked in Membership and Development at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, primarily in digital fundraising and online engagement.

Monica has a Master’s in Public Health and believes animal welfare is an essential part of a healthy community. Monica is passionate about advocating for those in need and working with people who are committed to supporting the animals and people in Monterey County. She’s inspired by the lives changed every day through donor support and the compassionate team at the SPCA. 

She shares her home with her high school sweetheart, Chris, and their adopted Catahoula mix, Denver, who is a proud graduate of SPCA's training classes. She loves spending time at the beach, hiking and being in nature, and traveling.
