Every year, SPCA Monterey County rescues over 1,500 stray dogs and cats. Sadly, 89% of those stray pets arrive with no form of identification - no collar, tag, or microchip - making it incredibly difficult to reunite them with their families.
To help reduce this number, the SPCA is holding a free microchipping event for all cats, dogs, puppies, and kittens. The event will take place on Saturday, May 30, from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm at the SPCA Veterinary Clinic. During the event, the SPCA will also offer pet vaccinations for just $25 each. No appointments needed.
“It is heartbreaking to see a pet who is healthy and well-loved arrive with no identification,” says Ben Shaw, SPCA Shelter Manager. “We post their photos online and search through lost pet reports, but often no owner comes looking for them. If this free microchip event reunites even one pet, it will be completely worth it.”
A microchip is a small, electronic chip about the size of a grain of rice. It contains a unique identification number that is tied to your information.
“Collars and tags are great at helping reunite pets quickly, but collars can slip off,” says Ben. “Many owners tell us they had just removed their pet’s collar when their pet went missing. By providing microchips and encouraging pet owners to use collars, we hope more pets can be reunited with their families without even needing to come to shelters.”
